FSMA and ECONOMIC DATA WORKSHOP
Representatives present from the Parties of the FSMA were Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Tokelau; Tuvalu participated virtually. The two-and-a-half-day workshop was held in Majuro at the PNA Headquarters from 4 to 6 August 2025.
This workshop is part of the review process initiated by the PNA Ministers during their Annual Ministerial Meeting in 2020.
The purpose of the review is to ensure that the FSMA continues to meet its intended goals and objectives, which are to maximize benefits, support, and facilitate the development aspirations of the Parties from the sustainable tuna fisheries, both now and in the future.
The Economic Data workshop took place immediately after the conclusion of the FSMA workshop. During this two-day workshop from 6 to 7 August 2025, PNA Representatives were introduced to the proposed data elements which will assess the national comparative advantages of PNA members in fishing and processing.
The Economic Data workshop was the first economic focused workshop for the PNA. The objective of this workshop was to gather background, information, and suggestions to the data elements from the members. The workshop proved valuabåle as each country provided useful data and feedback to the data elements focused on Fishing, Vessel Servicing, Processing, and Trade.
FSM’s Acting Director Ms. Liman Helgenberger, on behalf of the participating group, thanked the PNA Office and acknowledged the CEO and staff for organizing and facilitating the two workshops. PNAO CEO, Dr. Sangaalofa Clark, thanked the participants for their productive feedback and discussions. She praised the participants and wished them well in their continued commitment to working through their differences to find common ground where all PNA members benefit from the arrangement and related initiatives.
